The Walk of Life

The British rock band Dire Straits, featuring Mark Knopfler, had a hit song on their Brothers in Arms album titled, Do the Walk of Life.

The song was an uplifting rock’n rhythm that made you want to move. Their music video was chalk full fun sports out takes and added to the fun. Check the video here or click the image

Knopfler’s lyrics inspired us as we journeyed through daily life with lyrics like

And after all the violence and double talk
Theres just a song in the trouble and the strife
You do the walk, you do the walk of life

The song so penetrated the culture that 907 days after the tragic loss of Colombia and all its crew with disintegrated on re-entry February 1, 2003, STS-114 "Return to Flight" Discover Shuttle crew in 2005 heard "Do the Walk of Life" as the astronaut’s wake up song on flight day 7 as they conducted space walks.

Still today on the occasions I hear a current Mark Knopfler creation, like 2007 "Punish the Monkey" there is a fondness that stems from that 80's "Do the Walk of Life."

As Paul writes the believers at Ephesus nearly 20 centuries ago he calls them to do the walk of life with three phrases, they could be lyrics.

"Walk in love," specifically "walk the way Jesus did, loving us and giving himself for us."

"Walk as children of light," meaning you have been changed you were darkness now you are light.

"Be careful how you walk," that is, be intentional in life and exercise wisdom in your steps.

Today I am wearing a pedometer to keep me conscious of my steps. Lord in the same way may I be intentional to walk more consistent today with who I have become in you, and to love not as I please but more as you did me. Amen

Ephesians 5

v2 And walk in love, as the Messiah also loved us and gave Himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God.

v8 For you were once darkness, but now [you are] light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

v15 Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk——not as unwise people but as wise——
